Adem Jashari Memorial Complex

The Adem Jashari Memorial Complex in Prekaz, 3 km from Skenderaj town, is the most important historical site in Kosovo. Adem Jashari was a founding commander of the Kosovo Liberation Army; his death in the 1998 Serbian security forces attack on the family compound, alongside 57 members of his family, became the defining martyrdom narrative of Kosovo's independence movement. He is referred to in Kosovo simply as "Commander Adem" or the "Legendary Commander."

The memorial complex preserves the compound walls, riddled with bullet holes, and the family graves. The main building — bombed and burned — stands as it was left after the attack, its interior visible through the shattered walls. A small museum on the site provides context and photographs. The complex is deeply significant to Kosovars; visit respectfully and expect families paying their respects alongside tourists.

A story
On 5–7 March 1998, Serbian special forces surrounded the Jashari compound in Prekaz and attacked it with heavy weapons. Adem Jashari, his extended family, and fighters defending the compound held out for three days. By the time the attack ended, 58 members of the Jashari family were dead, including women and children. The massacre drew international condemnation and accelerated NATO's eventual intervention in 1999.
