Cesis is a small town and the main sights can be seen in a half day, though the castle and museum complex reward more time. The castle ruins, St John's Church, the old town streets, the local brewery, and the Gauja Valley forest walks make it a satisfying stop on the way north from Riga or south from Estonia.
