Jurmala's beach cafes are seasonal structures that appear each May and are dismantled before winter. They line the back of the dunes near Majori, offering cold beer, grilled sausages, ice cream, and coffee to a mix of sunbathers and families. The best of them have deck chairs and parasols on wooden platforms, and in fine weather the atmosphere is easy and informal — the Baltic version of a beach bar, without the pretension.
The standard drink is a cold Latvian lager (Aldaris or Cēsu Alus), though some of the better-established cafes serve simple cocktails and wine. Food is typically snack-level: grilled corn, kebabs, pancakes with jam. Prices are reasonable; nobody comes to Jurmala's beach cafes for a serious meal.
In the evenings after the beach empties, a few of these places keep going with music and a younger crowd. The season runs firmly from June to late August — by September most are closed or running skeleton service.
