Dzintari Forest Park

Dzintari Forest Park is a quiet expanse of pine woodland between the Dzintari train stop and the beach, crisscrossed by sandy paths and wooden boardwalks. It's used by Jurmala residents as an everyday park — somewhere for a morning run, a walk with a dog, or a picnic away from the crowds on Jomas iela. In summer the air smells strongly of warm pine resin.

The park contains an open-air concert stage, the Dzintari Concert Hall, which hosts classical concerts, pop performances, and folk festivals throughout the summer season. It's one of the main event venues in the Riga region during July and August, and catching a performance here — whether a serious orchestral programme or a cheerful Latvian folk evening — makes for a good evening out from either Jurmala or Riga.

The boardwalk paths through the park connect with the beach, making it easy to combine a forest walk with a swim. The forest itself is mostly Scots pine on sandy soil, the same landscape that runs along much of the eastern Baltic coast.
