Bridge of White Rose

The Bridge of White Rose is Alytus's most distinctive landmark: a sweeping pedestrian bridge over the Nemunas that connects the city's two halves. At several hundred metres, it is among the longest pedestrian bridges in Lithuania, and the walk across offers good views up and down the forested river valley.

The bridge also serves as the main promenade for an evening stroll, with locals walking dogs, cycling, and lingering over the river views. It joins the older, northern part of the city to the newer southern districts, and crossing it gives you a good sense of how the Nemunas physically defines Alytus.

A story
The bridge was built on the piers of a railway bridge that Russian forces blew up in 1915 during their retreat from the advancing German army. The river has been crossed at this point for centuries; the current structure, one of Lithuania's longest pedestrian bridges, carries walkers over a river that was once a frontier between empires.
