Nemunas Riverbanks

The Nemunas riverbanks are Alytus at its best. The river cuts a wide, forest-fringed valley through the city, and the paths along both banks offer excellent walking and cycling — flat, well-maintained, and genuinely attractive. The pine forests that line much of the bank are part of the Dzukija ecosystem that characterises this corner of southern Lithuania.

In summer the riverbanks see a steady stream of locals — families on bikes, joggers, people fishing from the banks or launching kayaks. In winter the frozen river and snow-covered forest have their own austere beauty. The Alytus Stadium sits near the bank and the riverside paths connect the city's two sections, making this the main green corridor through the urban area.
