The Way of the Cross Chapels are what make Žemaičių Kalvarija more than a village with a handsome church. Nineteen chapels, containing twenty stations, are spread through the hilly town on a route of about seven kilometres.
You do not need to walk every station to understand the place, but following a section of the route changes the visit. The chapels turn lanes, slopes, streams, and churchyard edges into a devotional map, and during the July festival the same route fills with pilgrims.
