Come in early July if you want to see Žemaičių Kalvarija at full intensity. The Great Žemaičių Kalvarija Festival, dedicated to the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, brings pilgrims to the basilica and the calvary chapels for processions and services.
Outside the festival, late spring through early autumn is best for walking the hilly route. In winter the village is quieter and the chapels can still be atmospheric, but short days and poor weather make it more of a stop for dedicated pilgrims than casual travellers.
