Esch-sur-Sûre Castle

The ruined castle above Esch-sur-Sûre is the most dramatic sight in the Éislek region, rising from a rocky spur almost entirely surrounded by a bend in the Sûre river. The town below — really just a handful of houses and a church — sits in the loop, and the effect from above is of a natural moat. The climb to the castle is short and steep; the views from the top over the forested valley are worth every step.

Esch-sur-Sûre itself is a pleasant place to stop for lunch. The village has a couple of good restaurants serving local cuisine, and the path beside the river makes for an easy walk before or after the castle.

A story
The castle at Esch-sur-Sûre dates to the 10th century and commands a near-perfect loop of the Sûre river — the town below sits in a horseshoe bend with the river as a natural moat. The ruins still crown the rocky spur above the village. During the Second World War, the surrounding area saw heavy fighting during the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944 and January 1945.
