Kaundorf

Tiny Éislek village in wooded northern Luxembourg, close to the Upper Sûre Lake

Kaundorf is a small village in the Éislek region of northern Luxembourg, set in hilly, wooded countryside near the Upper Sûre Lake. With just a handful of houses clustered around a quiet lane, it is the kind of place where the main activities are walking, cycling, and doing nothing at all -- which is exactly the point.

The Upper Sûre Natural Park surrounds the village, offering well-marked hiking trails through forests of beech and oak along the shores of the lake. The lake itself, created by a dam in the 1960s, is popular for swimming and kayaking in summer. The Priminus Chapel, a small Romanesque structure at the edge of the village, is worth a look, and nearby Esch-sur-Sûre with its dramatic ruined castle is an easy five-kilometre drive.

In the village itself, a World War II bunker from the Westwall fortifications can be visited nearby, an eerie reminder of the area's strategic importance during the Battle of the Bulge. The surrounding countryside is dotted with similar tiny villages that feel pleasantly remote despite being less than an hour from Luxembourg City. Kaundorf works best as a base for a few days of outdoor exploration in one of Luxembourg's least-visited corners.
