Esch-sur-Sûre Dam

The Esch-sur-Sûre Dam is an arch dam built across the Sûre river just upstream of Esch-sur-Sûre village, creating the Upper Sûre Lake. The dam wall rises about 50 metres and can be viewed from a footpath that crosses its crest, giving a good sense of the scale of the reservoir stretching back through the forested valley.

The viewpoint from the dam crest looks south over the village of Esch-sur-Sûre, with the ruined castle above and the horseshoe bend of the river visible below. It is a five-minute walk from the village car park and worth combining with a visit to the castle and a walk along the lake shore.

A story
When the Esch-sur-Sûre Dam was completed in 1961, it created Luxembourg's largest reservoir and drowned several farms in the valley below. The dam now supplies drinking water to around 60% of Luxembourg's population, making this quiet corner of the Éislek one of the country's most important pieces of infrastructure.
