Upper Sûre Natural Park

The Upper Sûre Natural Park stretches across the forested hills and valleys of northwestern Luxembourg, surrounding Kaundorf on all sides. The terrain is classic Ardennes country: beech and oak forests on the hillsides, river valleys threading through, and the Upper Sûre Lake filling a wide basin created when the Esch-sur-Sûre Dam was completed in 1961.

The park has an extensive network of marked hiking and cycling trails. The GR5 long-distance route passes through the area, and there are loops of varying length starting from several villages. Birdwatching is productive — kingfishers work the river, black kites and red kites circle above the forests, and dippers bob on the rocks below. The park centre in Esch-sur-Sûre has maps and information about the trails and local wildlife.

A story
The Upper Sûre Natural Park covers 82,000 hectares — roughly a fifth of Luxembourg's total land area — making it by far the largest protected area in the country. Despite this, very few tourists visit: the Éislek is Luxembourg's most sparsely populated and least-known region.
