Grund

The Grund is the valley neighbourhood directly below the old town, threaded by the Alzette. The drop from the Haute Ville is more than fifty metres — taken on foot down winding lanes, by the free public lift from Saint-Esprit Plateau, or by car through the city's longest tunnel. The Grund's stone houses, narrow lanes, the Neimënster Abbey, and the small park along the river give it the most picturesque setting in the city.

It is also the main eating and drinking district. From late afternoon the riverside terraces fill with after-work crowds; weekends are loud and lively, often spilling onto the bridges. The Grund is small, walkable end to end in fifteen minutes, and worth at least one evening on any visit.
