Ardennes Draft Horse Domain

The Touristic Domain in Munshausen is built around working demonstrations with the Ardennes draft horse — a massive, powerfully built breed with a characteristic thick mane and calm temperament. Staff show how the horses were used in traditional farming and forestry work, and visitors can watch or, depending on the season, take short rides or help with daily care. The setting is an old farmstead that has been kept functional rather than prettified into a museum piece.

It is a particularly good outing for families with children, who tend to be fascinated by the sheer size of the animals. The domain also keeps other traditional farm animals alongside the horses. Timing your visit to a morning session when work demonstrations are running makes the most of a visit; in the afternoon the pace slows considerably.

A story
The Ardennes draft horse is one of the oldest heavy breeds in the world, described by Julius Caesar in his account of the Gallic Wars. By the mid-20th century the breed had nearly vanished from Luxembourg's farms as tractors took over; the Touristic Domain in Munshausen was established partly to keep the working tradition alive and to preserve knowledge of how these horses were actually used in Ardennes agriculture.
