Galichnik Wedding Festival

Every year on the weekend closest to St Peter's Day (12 July in the old Orthodox calendar), Galichnik comes back to life for its famous wedding festival. A real couple is chosen to be married in full traditional Mijak style: the groom and his party ride through the village on horseback, women in elaborate embroidered costumes carry dowry items in procession, and the square rings with traditional music played on zurlas and tapans.

The ceremony itself blends pre-Christian and Orthodox rites and lasts two full days. Visitors are welcomed freely — you can sit in the square, watch the dances, photograph the costumes, and join in the feasting. There is nothing staged about it beyond the fact that the couple is chosen in advance; the customs, the songs, and the emotions are entirely real.

A story
The festival was revived in 1973 to preserve Mijak traditions after most of the village population had emigrated to Skopje and abroad. A real couple competes for the honour of being married in the old way — the selection is treated as a genuine mark of distinction, and former festival couples are celebrated in the village for life.
