Goce Delčev Square

One of the largest public squares in North Macedonia, the heart of city life

Goce Delčev Square covers nearly 24,000 square metres in the centre of Strumica — out of proportion to a city of 50,000, and almost a small park in scale. Pedestrian-only and lined with cafés, it is where everyone in Strumica seems to be at least once a day. The square was extensively rebuilt and pedestrianised in the early 2000s, with limestone paving, fountains, and a long covered colonnade running along one side.

It is named for Goce Delčev, the revolutionary leader who organised the 1903 Ilinden Uprising against Ottoman rule and is one of the founding heroes of the modern Macedonian and Bulgarian states (both countries claim him). A statue of him stands in the square. The corso — the evening promenade before dinner — is a serious institution: anyone hoping to see local life should join the slow loops of the square around 7pm.
