Carmelite Parish Church, Balluta

The Carmelite Parish Church at Balluta Bay is an unusual piece of neo-Gothic architecture for Malta, where the Baroque tradition dominates ecclesiastical building. The church was built in 1859 and enlarged in the 20th century, with a prominent facade that overlooks the bay and a blue-domed interior that is calmer and cooler than it looks from outside.

The exterior is the best thing about it — the relationship between the church's stepped facade, the Balluta Buildings to one side, and the bay below makes for one of the more composed urban set-pieces in St Julian's. The church is open to visitors outside Mass times; the interior is brief but worth the five minutes.
