The Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God is the largest and most impressive space in the Tipova complex — a basilica-style chamber cut directly into the limestone cliff face, with plastered and painted walls, a vaulted ceiling, and a carved rock altar. The church is believed to date from the 14th or 15th century in its present form, though the site was in use centuries earlier. Natural light enters through openings in the cliff, and the effect inside is calm and otherworldly.
The church is still an active Orthodox Christian site, and services are held here on major feast days. A small community of monks maintains the complex. When visiting, dress modestly — women should cover their heads and shoulders. The combination of rock-hewn architecture, ancient frescoes (partially preserved), and the dramatic cliff setting makes this the most memorable religious site in Moldova after Orheiul Vechi.
