Piața Centrală (Central Market)

Chisinau's main market sprawls across several blocks east of the central park — a working farmers' market dating back to the 19th century, with covered halls, open-air stalls, and a permanent procession of villagers in from the countryside with whatever is in season. Cherries and apricots in June, watermelons and tomatoes in August, walnuts and brined cheese in October.

The best section is the covered cheese-and-pickle hall, where producers sell their own brinza (salty white sheep's cheese), pickled tomatoes, dried plums, and home-pressed sunflower oil. Bring small notes; bargaining is friendly but expected. Busiest Saturday mornings; quieter Sunday afternoons.
