Dniester Promenade

Riverside walk along the right bank of the Dniester below the fortress

The promenade along the right bank of the Dniester is the most pleasant strip of public space in the city: a tree-lined path with benches, modest Soviet-era statues and views across the wide river to Tiraspol. It is busiest on summer evenings, when families come out to walk, fish and eat ice cream — one of those daily-life scenes that does more to convey what Bender is actually like than any monument can.

The walk is best taken north from the road bridge that connects Bender to Tiraspol, following the bank up toward the fortress; the citadel comes into view as a long line of weathered stone walls rising directly out of the river plain. Wear shoes that can handle uneven paving and bring a bottle of water — there is little shade in midsummer.
