Just north of Bender, the village of Varnița is one of the strangest points on the Moldovan map: physically attached to Bender, technically inside the same municipality, but governed by Chisinau rather than Tiraspol. The result is a small island of Moldovan jurisdiction inside Transnistrian-administered territory — a place where Moldovan and Transnistrian flags fly within a few hundred metres of one another and where Russian and Romanian street signs alternate from block to block.
There is nothing in particular to see. The interest is in the situation itself: the local police, the schools, the post office, the cell-phone reception, all switch over as you walk down the street. It is a useful corrective to the assumption that the Transnistrian boundary is a clean line on a map. Pass through on the way out of the city toward Chisinau and look at the signage.
