The natural island just east of Our Lady of the Rocks is Sveti Đorđe — St George's Island — which has a Benedictine monastery (now mostly closed to visitors) and a small cemetery. The monastery, originally built in the 12th century, was one of the most important in the Bay of Kotor. The island is smaller and quieter than its neighbour, and visiting is sometimes restricted, but the exterior view from the water is striking.
The two islands together make one of the classic compositions of the Bay of Kotor: the domed church of Our Lady of the Rocks on one side, the dark cypresses of Sveti Đorđe on the other, with the bare limestone mountains of the bay as a backdrop. Most photographers end up at the Perast waterfront in the late afternoon, when the light comes from the west and falls directly on the islands.
