Almere-Poort

Almere-Poort is the newest of the city's districts, built from 2003 onwards on the strip of polder between the A6 motorway and the IJmeer. It is the most architecturally experimental of the four — long Mediterranean-influenced colonnades along the Europalaan, the Citadel-Poort development by MVRDV, and the Olympiakwartier sports cluster around the Topsportcentrum.

Its real draw is the IJmeer waterfront: a long strip of artificial beach (the Almeerderstrand), windsurfing flats, and views across the water to Amsterdam's tower blocks on a clear day. The fast Hanzelijn train brings you here from Amsterdam-Zuid in twenty minutes.
