Kunstlinie (KAF)

The Kunstlinie, now branded KAF (Kunstlinie Almere Flevoland), is the city's combined theatre, gallery and concert venue, and the only Dutch building by the Tokyo studio SANAA (Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa, Pritzker Prize 2010). Completed in 2007, it sits on the southern edge of the Weerwater lake, a long low slab of subtly tinted glass that all but disappears into the water on a grey day.

Inside, two black-walled theatres and a smaller experimental hall are arranged off a series of light, open foyers. The programming covers contemporary dance, theatre and music, with a strong line in Dutch and international art-house performance. It is one of the few real architectural pilgrimage sites in Almere — admission to the building itself is free during opening hours.

A story
SANAA's design uses panes of plain glass in fourteen different shades of green and yellow — the colours change with the angle of view, so the building flickers as you walk along its edge.
