Weerwater

The Weerwater is the artificial lake that wraps around the southern edge of Almere-Stad. It was dug out when the polder was drained — the planners deliberately left a body of water in the middle of the city to give the centre a horizon and a recreational front. The shoreline carries a six-kilometre footpath and cycle loop, the Kunstlinie sits on its northern bank, and there are landing stages for sailing dinghies and SUPs.

In the summer the lake hosts open-air concerts and the Libelle Zomerweek festival; in winter, when it freezes hard enough, locals skate on it. The southern shore was the site of the 2022 Floriade horticultural expo and is now slowly being redeveloped into the Hortus garden district.
