Cobra Museum

The Cobra Museum of Modern Art is the only museum in the world dedicated to the CoBrA movement, the post-war collective whose members included Karel Appel, Corneille, and Constant. The permanent collection spans the work of all the leading figures, from the manic Appel canvases of the early 1950s to the more subdued later work of Constant.

The building, designed by Wim Quist and opened in 1995, is a calm modernist structure of glass and pale brick on the edge of the Stadshart shopping area. Temporary exhibitions cover related figures and broader themes in twentieth-century European art. A small café and museum shop are part of the visit.

A story
CoBrA was a short-lived but explosive avant-garde movement founded in 1948 by artists from Copenhagen, Brussels, and Amsterdam — the cities that gave it its name. Karel Appel, Asger Jorn, and Constant Nieuwenhuys rejected the prevailing abstraction in favour of raw, child-like imagery and bold colour. The group dissolved after just three years but left a lasting mark on European post-war art.
