Oost

Oost (East Amsterdam) is the city's most ethnically diverse neighbourhood and one of its least visited by tourists, which makes it one of the most interesting. The Dappermarkt, on Dapperstraat, is Amsterdam's most culturally mixed daily market — Moroccan spices, Surinamese rotis, Turkish breads, West African fabrics, and Dutch stroopwafels are sold side by side along a street that feels entirely unlike the tourist-facing parts of the city.

Oosterpark, the large park at the heart of the neighbourhood, was Amsterdam's first public park (opened 1891) and is still its most democratic — families, picnickers, young children on the climbing frames, older men playing chess, and the occasional political gathering at the memorial obelisk. The park has a community feel that Vondelpark, for all its size, has largely lost to joggers and tourist cyclists.

The Tropenmuseum, at the park's northeast corner, is one of Amsterdam's most underrated museums. Originally built to display the material wealth of the Dutch colonial empire, it has been substantially reinterpreted over the decades and now presents a frank account of Dutch colonial history alongside its collection of objects from Asia, Africa, and the Americas. The building itself — a monumental brick structure from 1926 — is extraordinary.

The streets around Linnaeusstraat and Beukenplein have become increasingly interesting for food and drink over the past decade. The neighbourhood's diversity makes this one of the few parts of Amsterdam where you can eat genuinely well across a range of cuisines within a few blocks — Surinamese, Turkish, Indonesian, and West African restaurants operate alongside the wine bars and coffee shops that have followed the usual gentrification trajectory. The pace remains slower than De Pijp, and the prices lower.

Further out in Watergraafsmeer, Betondorp — "Concrete Village" — is a 1920s housing estate built as a large-scale experiment in concrete construction, with streets named after Dutch cultural figures and a village-like atmosphere unusual for Amsterdam. Well outside the usual tourist routes, but worth the tram ride if you're interested in architecture or urbanism.
