De Markt

The main market square, lined with terraces and dominated by the town hall

De Markt is the main square of Den Bosch and the natural centre of city life. It's a large, attractive space dominated by the Renaissance-style town hall on the north side and surrounded by café terraces that are packed from the first warm day of spring until the last of autumn. The square hosts a market on Wednesday and Saturday mornings.

The town hall facade is worth examining — it dates from the 17th century and features a carillon that plays automatically at intervals. Around the square and in the streets leading off it, you'll find most of the city's better restaurants, bars, and the bakeries selling Bossche bollen. The Markt is the logical place to end a day of sightseeing, with a beer in hand.
