Jan de Groot

The best Bossche bollen in town, since 1935

The Bossche bol is Den Bosch's signature treat: an oversized cream puff the size of a tennis ball, filled with whipped cream and entirely coated in dark chocolate. Every bakery in town sells them, but Jan de Groot on the Markt is the benchmark. The bakery has been making them since 1935 and the recipe has not changed. They are best eaten immediately, standing over a bin, accepting that chocolate will end up on your clothes.

A single Bossche bol is a proper snack — the thing is enormous, and the cream-to-chocolate ratio is carefully calibrated. Jan de Groot also sells other Brabant baking, including almond-paste pastries and regional biscuits, but the bol is why people queue.
