Housed in a beautifully restored Gothic church, the Jheronimus Bosch Art Center is dedicated entirely to the life and work of Den Bosch's most famous son. The museum doesn't hold original paintings — the originals are scattered across museums in Madrid, Vienna, Lisbon, and elsewhere — but it has assembled high-resolution reproductions of every known work, displayed at original scale, which is its own kind of revelation.
The accompanying interpretation is thorough without being tedious. The centre explains the religious symbolism and folkloric references encoded in Bosch's work, places it in the context of 15th-century Brabant life and theology, and honestly acknowledges how much remains mysterious. After an afternoon here and at the Noordbrabants Museum, you'll understand why scholars are still arguing about what these paintings mean.
