The Martinikerk, a late-Gothic cruciform church with a separate brick tower, has stood at the centre of Franeker since the fifteenth century. Inside, the whitewashed walls are lined with about sixty inscribed gravestones of professors, students, and patrons of the university, making it an unusual roll-call of Dutch academic history.
The organ, by Christian Müller — the same builder responsible for the celebrated organ in Haarlem's Sint-Bavo — dates from 1735 and is still played at summer recitals. Worth checking the schedule.
