Korendragershuisje and Waag

The Waag (Weighing House) on Franeker's main square is a small, stepped-gable building from 1657, with the slim turret at its corner that was a Frisian speciality. Goods coming in by canal from the surrounding farmland — butter, cheese, grain — were weighed and taxed here before being released to market.

The nearby Korendragershuisje, the tiny "corn carriers' guild house" tucked along the canal, dates from the same period and shows the kind of small civic architecture that has been almost entirely lost from larger Dutch cities. Both are now used as small restaurants or shops; the exteriors are the main point.
