The Vismarkt — literally "Fish Market" — is the second great open space in central Groningen, set just west of the Grote Markt across the Waagstraat. The Aa-Kerk's steep red-brick tower rises over the western end, and the long classical façade of the Korenbeurs (the old corn exchange, now a supermarket) runs down the south side.
Tuesday and Saturday are full market days, with stalls covering the entire square — flowers, cheese, herring, books, vintage clothing. The cafés along the north side fill up in summer. It is generally less touristy than the Grote Markt and works better as a sit-down spot.
