Two kilometres east of Lochem, the country estate of Ampsen has been in the same family for nearly 400 years. The main house is a handsome rebuilding of the 19th century; an older fortified house stood on the same moated island from at least the 15th century. The buildings are not open to the public, but the grounds — woods, a long avenue of lime trees, a deer park — are crossed by waymarked walking and cycling paths.
It is the easiest of several similar estates around Lochem to combine with a walk into town. Bring a bike: the gravel drives are made for it.
