Grote Kerk (Gudulakerk)

Medieval brick church on Lochem's market square

The brick Grote Kerk dominates Lochem's market square. The current building dates mainly from the 15th century, raised in a regional Gothic style with a sturdy west tower that doubles as the town's most prominent landmark. The interior is largely whitewashed in the Calvinist tradition and shows the remains of late-medieval wall paintings uncovered in 20th-century restoration.

Climb the tower (when open, usually summer Saturdays) for views over the Achterhoek's farmland. The church hosts the occasional concert; check the noticeboard outside.

A story
The church is named for Saint Gudula of Brabant, a 7th-century princess whose lamp, legend says, was extinguished by the devil but relit by the angels. The name is shared with the cathedral in Brussels — the result of a medieval cult that spread along the trading routes between the Low Countries.
