Vleeshal

The Vleeshal — the old Meat Hall — stands on the Markt next to the town hall, its Dutch Renaissance facade from 1588 a companion piece to the Gothic excess of its neighbour. Built to centralise the meat trade and ensure proper inspection of butchered animals, it is one of the best-preserved sixteenth-century market halls in the Netherlands.

The building now functions as an exhibition space for contemporary art, operated in conjunction with the Zeeuws Museum. Check what is showing before you visit — the quality of exhibitions tends to be high, and the space is a beautiful one to see art in.
