Zeeuws Museum

The Zeeuws Museum occupies rooms within the Abdij complex, which gives it one of the most atmospheric settings of any regional museum in the Netherlands. Its permanent collection covers Zeeland's maritime history, Delftware and silver, traditional costume, and modern art from the province.

The highlight is the set of Zeeland Tapestries, six monumental woven panels depicting Dutch naval victories in the late sixteenth century. They hang in their own gallery and are considered among the finest pieces of late-Renaissance tapestry in existence. There is also a good archaeological section with Roman-period finds from the estuary region.

A story
The museum's most prized possessions are the Zeeland Tapestries — six enormous late-sixteenth-century wool-and-silk hangings that record the sea battles of the Eighty Years' War from the Dutch perspective. They were commissioned by the States of Zeeland in 1593 to celebrate victories over Spain. Each is around 6 metres wide and 4 metres tall.
