Martinikerk

Late-Gothic brick church at the centre of the old town

The Martinikerk is the late-Gothic brick church at the centre of Sneek, built between the late 15th and early 16th century on the site of an earlier wooden church. Its slender wooden bell tower — much altered after fires and storms over the centuries — pokes above the rooftops and serves as a landmark anywhere in the centre. Inside, the interior is plain in the Protestant Dutch tradition, with a fine 18th-century pulpit and a baroque organ that is occasionally used for concerts.

The square in front (Marktstraat) is the traditional centre of town and hosts the weekly market on Saturday mornings. Opening hours are limited outside service times — check ahead if you want to see the interior.
