A small but historically odd monument on the corner of Kogerstraat and De Zes, easy to walk past without noticing. The simple stone pillar commemorates Den Burg's brief but unusually committed enthusiasm for Esperanto in the early twentieth century, when the language was taught in local schools and used at island gatherings. Almost nobody speaks it on Texel today, but the monument is a quiet reminder of one of the more idealistic moments in twentieth-century Dutch culture.
It takes less than five minutes to find and read, but it is the kind of detail that gives Den Burg its character — a hint that small Dutch villages have stranger histories than they let on.
