Dom Tower

Tallest church tower in the Netherlands, 465 steps to the top

Address Domplein 21, 3512 JE

At 112 metres, the Dom Tower is the tallest church tower in the Netherlands — and the view from the top is the best in the country. A storm in 1674 tore the nave of the adjoining cathedral apart, and the two have been separated ever since. The original outline of the church is marked in the paving of the square. Climbing the 465 steps is how you earn the panorama.

A story
On 1 August 1674, a tornado swept through Utrecht and tore the nave of the cathedral clean off its foundations in a matter of minutes, leaving the tower and the choir standing separately on either side of an empty gap. The city lacked the funds to rebuild it. Three and a half centuries later, the gap is still there — an accidental piazza that is now one of the most distinctive squares in the Netherlands.
