The Cauberg is a short, punchy hill climb on the western edge of Valkenburg — unremarkable by any objective measure but legendary in professional cycling. The hill has hosted the UCI Road World Championships finish line four times and has been a decisive point in the Amstel Gold Race and other Ardennes classics. Cycling fans make pilgrimages here in much the same spirit as football supporters visiting famous stadiums.
Walking or riding the Cauberg takes about 10 minutes. The top gives views over Valkenburg and the Geul valley. For committed cyclists, the longer Geulhemmerberg and the Bemelerberg are nearby climbs of similar character. Valkenburg is a natural base for exploring the South Limburg cycling landscape that inspired Dutch professional cycling's golden generation.
