The Grotestraat pedestrian street is Valkenburg's main shopping strip, with a mix of tourist souvenir shops, clothing stores, and bakeries. The Christmas market, held in the caves under the castle from November through December, is one of the largest underground Christmas markets in the world — genuinely atmospheric, and worth timing a visit around. Local marl stone objects and Limburg pottery make more distinctive souvenirs than the castle-themed tourist tat.
