Noordhavenpoort and Zuidhavenpoort

Twin medieval harbour gates framing the entrance to Zierikzee's old port.

The Noordhavenpoort and Zuidhavenpoort stand across from each other at the old harbour entrance, marking the point where ships once passed from open water into town. The southern gate is the more imposing of the pair, but together they make one of the most memorable corners of Zierikzee.

This is a good place to slow down rather than just tick off a monument. Walk both sides of the harbour, look back at the gates from the quay, and notice how the old port still shapes the centre. The town's best photographs are often taken here, especially when the light catches the brick and water together.
