Ålesund Airport (Vigra) is the main regional airport, located on the island of Vigra about 15 kilometres from the city centre, connected by bus and by the Vigra fixed link road tunnel. Norwegian and SAS operate flights to Oslo; there are also direct flights to several other Norwegian cities and some European destinations. The drive from the airport is about 25 minutes.
There is no train to Ålesund — the city was never connected to the main Norwegian rail network. The nearest train station is Åndalsnes, about 120 kilometres away via a spectacular mountain road. Several bus companies run services to Bergen (about 7–8 hours via the Stryn mountain route) and to other coastal towns.
The most scenic way to arrive is by ferry: Hurtigruten coastal steamers stop at Ålesund on their Bergen–Kirkenes route, and several fjord ferries connect the city to the Geiranger and Romsdal fjords in summer.
