Sunnmøre Museum

The Sunnmøre Museum is an open-air collection of about 55 traditional buildings from the Sunnmøre region, reassembled around a small fjord arm on the eastern edge of Ålesund. Farms, boathouses, fishing huts, and a medieval trading post cluster around the water's edge in a setting that somehow manages not to feel artificial.

The museum also houses an impressive collection of traditional Norwegian boats — including replica Viking-age vessels — and runs boat tours on the fjord in summer. The indoor section covers the archaeological history of the region. Allow half a day if you want to see everything. The museum is about 5 kilometres from the city centre and most easily reached by car or bike.
