Whale Watching in Vesterålen

Andenes is one of the best places in Norway to see sperm whales without travelling to Svalbard. Unlike the humpbacks that visit the nearby Lofoten fjords in winter to feed on herring, sperm whales are present here year-round because the deep submarine canyon off the northwest coast provides the squid they hunt. Several operators run dedicated whale safari boats with naturalists on board, departing straight from the harbour.

Safari season runs roughly from late May to mid-September, when conditions allow reliable sightings. The whale centre in town tracks individual sperm whales by their fluke markings and has built up a catalogue of identified animals over decades. If whale-watching is the main reason for the trip, Andenes — not Lofoten — is the destination.
