By air: Bodø Airport (BOO) is the main hub for northern Norway, with frequent flights to Oslo (about 90 minutes), Bergen, Trondheim, and direct services to several Lofoten airstrips. SAS and Norwegian are the main carriers. The airport is 2 km from the city centre — walkable or a short taxi ride.
By train: Bodø is the northern terminus of the Nordlandsbanen railway, which runs from Trondheim (about 10 hours) through some spectacular mountain and fjord scenery. The train is slower than flying but considerably more interesting, passing through the Saltfjellet mountain plateau and along the Ranfjord. Night trains run the full distance; the overnight southbound service is a practical option.
By ferry to/from Lofoten: The express catamaran to Svolvær (Lofoten) takes 3.5 hours and runs several times a day in summer. Slower car ferries also operate. Bodø is the most common gateway to the Lofoten islands from the mainland; booking ahead in July and August is essential.
By Hurtigruten: The coastal steamer calls at Bodø twice a day — northbound toward Tromsø and Kirkenes, southbound toward Bergen. You can join or leave the route here; some travellers use it as a scenic addition to the train journey.
By road: Bodø is at the end of the E6 highway, which runs the entire length of Norway from the Swedish border south of Oslo. The drive from Mo i Rana takes about 2.5 hours; from Trondheim, plan for 7–8 hours.
