Papirbredden

Papirbredden — "paper banks" — is the name given to the revitalised stretch of waterfront on the Strømsø side of the Drammenselva, built on the site of a former paper mill. The development, completed in the mid-2000s, includes the Drammen public library (a strikingly designed building open to all, with good cafe seating), a university campus, and several residential and commercial buildings along the river.

The promenade along the water is the most pleasant walking route in central Drammen. In summer, terraces and pop-up food stalls appear along the edge, and the views across to Bragernes are good at any hour. The Ypsilon Bridge connects Papirbredden to the Bragernes side, making it easy to walk a loop across both banks. This area shows what Drammen has done right — it was derelict industrial land twenty years ago and is now genuinely enjoyable urban space.
