Fjord Kayaking

Flåm is one of the best bases for kayaking on the Sognefjord system. Rental equipment is available from the village, and the calm water of the Aurlandsfjord is suitable for paddlers of all levels outside of windy conditions. The inner fjord around Flåm offers stunning close-up views of the cliff walls and waterfalls that the ferry sees from a distance.

The most rewarding route is up the Nærøyfjord by kayak — a full-day trip of about 35 km return that takes you deep into some of the narrowest and most dramatic scenery in Norway. Guided tours that combine kayaking with a one-way ferry are a popular option for those who don't want to paddle both directions. Conditions can change quickly; check with local operators before setting out.
