Rallarvegen

Classic mountain cycling route descending from the Bergen Railway to Flåm.

Rallarvegen is the great bike ride of the Flåm area: an old construction road built for the Bergen Railway, now used by cyclists dropping from the high mountain plateau through Finse, Hallingskeid, Myrdal, and the Flåm valley. The best-known version starts by train at Finse and finishes down by the fjord, turning the railway landscape into a long downhill day.

Do not treat it as a casual rental-bike spin from the harbour. Snow can linger high on the route into summer, the surface is rough in places, and weather changes quickly above the tree line. In the right season, with a train plan and a decent bike, it is one of the most satisfying active ways to arrive back in Flåm: glaciers behind you, waterfalls ahead, and the fjord waiting at the bottom.
